How to understand a Similarity score
Start with the matched passages and source links, not the percentage alone. Review quotations, citations, the bibliography, common phrases, and uncited overlap one match at a time.
Why there is no universal safe percentage
Acceptable overlap depends on the assignment, subject, citation style, and your college or instructor's policy. Follow the rules for your course instead of relying on one cutoff.
AI writing and Similarity are different signals
Similarity checking compares text with sources. AI detection estimates writing patterns in qualifying prose. Neither score alone proves academic misconduct.
