Why Turnitin Shows No AI Percentage—and How That Differs From *%

A missing percentage is not 0%. First identify the report state, then check eligible prose, file requirements, and delivery status.

Yes, an AI report can legitimately show no percentage. Turnitin's official guidance describes a gray indicator with no percentage when a submission could not be processed for AI writing detection. This is different from a successful 0% result and from *%, which represents a score between 1% and 19% whose exact value is withheld.

This independent guide explains official Turnitin indicator states and then separates them from TurnitChecker's own upload and report-delivery workflow. TurnitChecker is not affiliated with or endorsed by Turnitin, LLC.

The short answer: no percentage does not mean 0%

What you seeWhat it means
0%The submission processed successfully and no qualifying text was flagged as likely AI-generated. It is not proof of human authorship.
*%The detected range is 1–19%. The exact percentage and highlights are withheld because results in this range are less reliable.
20–100%The submission processed successfully and the number estimates the share of qualifying prose flagged as likely AI-generated.
Gray indicator, no percentageThe submission could not be processed for AI detection. It must not be recorded as 0%.
LoadingAI processing is still in progress. Wait before deciding that the result is missing.
Error iconProcessing failed and the AI report cannot be opened. This is an error state, not an eligibility score.

Why can the AI percentage be unavailable?

Turnitin's official guidance lists several distinct causes: the file did not meet AI report requirements, AI detection was not enabled when the submission was made, the submission predates the feature, or processing failed. A new submission through an independent reporting service may also need support to distinguish content eligibility from a supplier or delivery problem.

Do not infer the cause from the missing number alone. A gray eligibility state, a red processing error, a report that is still loading, and a PDF that was never delivered require different responses.

Total word count is not the same as qualifying prose

Turnitin defines qualifying text as prose sentences in paragraphs that form a longer work, such as an essay, dissertation, or article. A document can contain many visible words while still containing too little qualifying prose for an AI report.

Turnitin says its model does not reliably detect non-prose or unconventional formats such as poetry, scripts, code, bullet points, tables, and annotated bibliographies. This does not mean every word inside a table is always ignored; it means table-heavy content should not be assumed to count like continuous paragraphs.

Official Turnitin requirements and TurnitChecker limits are different

The official platform's published AI-report requirements are not automatically the same as the narrower limits supported by TurnitChecker's current service. Your file must satisfy the service you are uploading through.

No percentage inside a report vs. no AI PDF in My Tasks

A gray indicator inside an official report is a documented report state. A Standard Check task that never receives its expected AI PDF is a delivery outcome that TurnitChecker support must review. The latter could be a legitimate eligibility result, a supplier processing error, or an incomplete delivery; the task screen alone should not guess which.

If your Similarity PDF is available but the AI PDF is absent, keep the original task and contact support privately with the Task ID. Do not repeatedly pay or resubmit until the existing task has been checked.

What should you do next?

  1. Identify the state: 0%, *%, an exact percentage, gray/no percentage, loading, an error icon, or a missing PDF.
  2. Confirm the document meets TurnitChecker's current file type, size, word-range, and language limits.
  3. Check whether the main body contains at least several hundred words of continuous prose paragraphs rather than mostly tables, bullets, labels, code, or short fragments.
  4. If tables are only being used for layout, preserve the meaning and move the main prose into normal paragraphs before a new submission. Do not distort genuinely tabular content simply to obtain a score.
  5. For loading, allow processing time. For an error or missing expected PDF, contact support privately with the existing Task ID before submitting again.
  6. Treat any available result as a review signal, not proof of authorship, misconduct, or guaranteed acceptance.

Common questions

Does no AI percentage mean the text is human-written?

No. It means no usable AI percentage was produced in that state. It is not a conclusion about authorship.

Does *% mean 0%?

No. *% represents a result above 0% and below 20%, with the exact score and highlights withheld.

Can I have a Similarity Report without an AI percentage?

Yes. Similarity and AI analysis are independent, and their content requirements and processing states differ.

Will reformatting guarantee an AI score?

No. Reformatting can make eligible prose clearer when tables were used only for layout, but no report outcome or percentage is guaranteed.
